Thanks to its proven reliability, cost-effectiveness and size, weight, and power (SWaP) optimization, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment is becoming increasingly attractive to system designers for use in space applications. As COTS equipment extends into mission-critical functions, the risks to the COTS electronics posed by space radiation need to be understood and mitigated.
