AESA radar for U.K. air force fleet brings $420 million contract win for BAE Systems, Leonardo

LONDON. Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) is set to receive active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar to equip its Typhoon combat jets under a £317 million ($420 million) contract between the Ministry of Defense (MoD) and BAE Systems and Leonardo.
Under the terms of the deal, the MoD/industry cooperative will deliver what's being called the European Common Radar System Mark 2 radar to install a multifunctional array providing advanced electronic warfare (EW) and electronic-attack capabilities in the Typhoon fleet, as well as more traditional radar functions. It is expected that the initial Mk2-equipped Typhoons -- plus three complete radar systems -- will be delivered to the MoD in 2022 for test and evaluation work.
Initial operating capability for the upgraded RAF jets is planned for soon after 2025.
