OTTAWA, Ontario. Engineers at CAE in Montreal launched the company’s Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Mission Trainer. Company officials made the announcement at the Unmanned Systems Canada conference. The new trainer has an open architecture design that uses commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and simulation software to create a platform-agnostic training system for UAS pilots, mission commanders, and sensor operators.

CAE engineers are is currently installing the new product at the UAS Centre of Excellence in Alma, Quebec, where it will train pilots and sensor operators on the Miskam UAS. CAE and Aeronautics are using the Miskam UAS -- a Canadian variant of the Aeronautics Dominator XP -- to show how unmanned systems can be used for civil applications such as inspecting remote pipelines and hydroelectric installations, forest fire surveillance, observing natural resources, and other applications.

The trainer includes: a ground control station (GCS) that is STANAG 4586-compliant; high-fidelity simulation software for sensors such as electro-optical (EO), infrared (IR), synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and others; simulated communication systems; simulation software for generating training scenarios; the CAE Medallion-6000 image generator; tactical synthetic environment and computer-generated forces that represent maritime, ground, and air assets; an instructor operator and mission brief/de-brief station; and correlated weather simulation.

The CAE UAS Mission Trainer can be adapted to simulate any specific UAS with any type of sensor payload suite. Through the common database (CDB) open architecture and COTS technology, CAE’s UAS Mission Trainer also is not subject to any International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) or restrictions. The immersive synthetic environment has capabilities for training as well as mission planning and mission rehearsal.

CAE will also be demonstrating the UAS Mission Trainer at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), Booth #1433, in Orlando, FL from December 3-6, 2012. For more information, visit www.cae.com.
