SAN DIEGO. The design, development, and limited deployment phase of The U.S. Navy’s Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) program has been completed by Northrop Grumman Corp.

The CANES program provides a common, across the fleet, computing environment by upgrading its cybersecurity, command and control, communications and intelligence (C4I), and streamline logistics. CANES is a programmatic and technical consolidation of five legacy shipboard network programs.

"By maximizing commonality, Northrop Grumman has delivered dozens of affordable, highly capable shipsets to enable warfighter information dominance," says Sam Abbate, vice president and general manager, command and control division, Northrop Grumman Information Systems.

Northrop Grumman was selected for the design and limited-production CANES contract in early 2012. CANES installations have been completed on several aircraft carriers, cruisers, and destroyers. The Navy’s inventory objective is to install CANES on platforms including ships, submarines, and land sites. Installations of the CANES program are ongoing.

The company applied its Modular Open Systems Approach-Competitive process and encourages competition to achieve the lifecycle benefits of open systems architecture and commercial off-the-shelf components and software.
