RQ-4 Global Hawk UAS adds GSX 70 weather radar

OLATHE, Kan. U.S. Air Force’s fleet of RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) will receive Garmin International Inc.’s GSX 70, a solid-state weather radar that provides operators with real-time weather information. Installations of the radar are expected to begin in early 2016.
The Doppler radar provides vertical scanning mode, which aids users in analyzing storm tops, gradients, and cell buildup activity at various ranges of altitudes. It also offers horizontal scan angles of up to 120 degrees.
The installation of the GSX 70 includes Turbulence Detection and Ground Clutter Suppression. The GSX 70 interfaces via Ethernet to a modem already installed RQ-4 Global Hawk aircraft so the weight and associated costs of installation are minimized, officials say.
