MUOS-based communications demonstrated on JTRS manpack radio

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Engineers at General Dynamics C4 Systems completed the first secure voice and data communications demonstration via the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite-communications waveform. The demo used the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit (HMS) two-channel networking radio (AN/PRC-155).
The manpack radio transmitted encrypted voice through a MUOS-satellite simulator to the MUOS ground station technology that will soon be deployed to Sicily.
MUOS will enable secure, mobile-networked communications worldwide, in even the most-austere environments. MUOS waveform development is on track to be completed later this year. By the end of 2012 MUOS capability will be offered on the AN/PRC-155 manpack radios.
By having two channels in just one radio, a warfighter can use one channel for line-of-sight SINCGARS and SRW waveforms, and bridge to a second channel using the MUOS satellite system, General Dynamics officials say.
