LONDON. Miniaturization of parts and components is identified as a key trend fueling the growth of the unattended ground sensors (UGS) market, forecast to grow by over $102.5 million by 2022, according to a new report from Technavio, "Global Unattended Ground Sensors Market 2018-2022."

The need for small, lightweight, and low-power sensors used in military and aerospace applications is boosting the demand for nanotechnology and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), a trend that has encouraged manufacturers around the world to develop innovative miniaturized electronics.

The low-cost sensors are less sophisticated and are mainly used for routine environment monitoring and hazard detection; also being developed, say the study authors, are biosensing devices that can be worn by troops to enable a comprehensive purview of the battlefield. UGS manufacturers are also developing highly robust, shock-resistant, and weatherproof sensors -- aimed at use in artillery and air deployment -- which is driving  miniaturization of parts and components.

Technavio’s analysts have predicted that the unattended ground sensors market will register a combined annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 6 percent by 2022.
