DARPA awards BAE Systems $4.6 million to develop stealthy active sonar solutions

MERRIMACK, N.H. BAE Systems has received a $4.6 million contract to work on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Mobile Offboard Clandestine Communications and Approach (MOCCA) program.
The objective of the MOCCA program -- according to the solicitation in DARPA's Broad Agency Announcement -- is to achieve significant standoff detection and tracking range of targets through the use of an active sonar projector deployed offboard a submarine and onboard an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). The submarine will need to be able to achieve reliable clandestine communications between the host submarine and supporting UUV without sacrificing the submarine's stealth.
BAE Systems will be working on Phase 1 of the MOCCA project, which calls for designing efficient sonar capabilities to maximize detection range and improve target identification and tracking.
