Common Imagery Processor from Northrop Grumman processes, transmits Global Hawk testbed data

BALTIMORE. The Northrop Grumman Common Imagery Processor (CIP) demonstrated the ability to receive, process, and disseminate Global Hawk Block 40 data on the Distributed Common Ground System – Imagery (DCGS-I) testbed in a flight event at China Lake, CA in late 2012. After the testbed received Global Hawk Block 40 concurrent modes data, CIP processed and transmitted the data to downstream ground station components for analysis.

CIP is the DCGS-I testbed’s primary sensor processing element, and processes airborne imagery data into an exploitable image before outputting the image to other testbed elements. The only platform capable of processing concurrent Syntheic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, the CIP leveraged updated software to simultaneously process the SAR imagery mode and pass ground moving target indicator data along to another processing system.

"The program reflects our open architecture approach and quick fielding of integrated software-based systems through the use of commercial and government off-the-shelf components," said Ed Bush, Vice President, C4ISR Networked Systems business unit, Northrop Grumman.

CIP is the DoD’s standard image processor and helps to consolidate redundant and stovepipe processing systems.
