Collaboration between U.S. Navy and Raytheon improves mine-hunting sonar

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. Engineers at Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) ? Division Newport and Raytheon worked together to enhance Raytheon?s AN/AQS-20A mine-hunting sonar, improving the system?s ability to identify and classify mines.

The collaboration between Raytheon NUWC formally began last year under a 'work for private party' contract funded by Raytheon. Officials state, the system was tested at sea and engineers were able to optimize the sonar's capability to capture images of the ocean floor with enough clarity to see the contents of lobster pots.

"Together with NUWC, we've applied our collective expertise to enhance this critical undersea warfare technology – and we've achieved outstanding results," says Paul Ferraro, vice president of Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems' Seapower Capability Systems.
