WASHINGTON. Military Embedded Systems is excited to announce today the winners of our Best in Show Award contest, which we're holding this week at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting, Oct. 14-16 in Washington, D.C. Contest winners – drawn from military embedded systems exhibitors at the event – are recognized for the improved performance and innovation they bring to military electronic systems applications such as radar, electronic warfare, avionics as well as for rugged computing, interconnect technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and embedded computing.

Four star, three star, and two star recognition will be given in multiple categories, with four stars as the top recognition. Winning entries are based on the counsel of an independent committee of industry judges.

4 STARS: RUGGED COMPUTING

 

ZMicro's Orion 32 4k Display has Ultra HD (3840x2160) resolution and a full 60Hz refresh rate. The display uses modular video input cards to support a host of video input formats and also supports Single Stream Transport for single source DisplayPort streams to provide a natural and continuous viewing experience. Users can view as many as five video sources simultaneously via ZMicro’s Virtual Window technology which enables control the size, position and other characteristics of each window independently. Orion also has SWaP efficiency; a single 29-pound Orion 32 display can be used to replace two or more full HD displays, achieving almost a 50% reduction in size, weight and power. The display also integrates Real-Time Enhanced Video (RTEV) to improve visibility in degraded environments.

Systel Inc.'s Raven Strike is a rugged mission computer built for modern fighting vehicles. The computer features state of the art Intel Xeon Scalable Processor CPU and NVIDIA GPGPU high performance parallel processing, HD full motion video capture and encode, and complete sensor integration and data fusion. Raven-Strike integrates maximum compute and networking throughout and enables deep learning and artificial intelligence capability through the use of neutral networks. Systel's thermal management engineering ensures survival in extreme operating conditions. Raven-Strike is currently being tested in the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) and Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) MET-D demonstrator and surrogate vehicles for the U.S. Army's Next Generation Combat Vehicle (NGCV) modernization priority. Raven-Strike is hosting the Hostile Fire Detection and Localization (HFDL) software system.

Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions' TCG HUNTR TDL Hub and Network Translator is an intelligent translation gateway for multiple TDLs. It includes patent-pending forwarding technology and is the only TDL gateway on the market that addresses all of the technical challenges and usability issues that have plagued legacy TDL gateways. The extreme simplicity and automation provided by the TCG HUNTR TDL Hub and Network Translator gives military organizations fast and easy access to relevant TDL data at the tactical edge of the battlefield and other military environments with minimal personnel, minimal training, and almost no expertise required. It also supports a wide variety of link types, including Link 16, Variable Message Format (VMF), Cursor on Target (CoT), Cooperative Electronic Support Measures Operations (CESMO), GPS, Situational Awareness Data Link (SADL), Joint Range Extension Applications Protocol (JREAP), Serial-J, and Socket-J.

4 STARS: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE/MACHINE LEARNING

General Micro Systems, Inc's (GMS') "LIGHTNING" X422 is a rugged, small form factor, conduction-cooled “shoebox”-sized co-processor engine. The X422 is a GPGPU Co-Processor System that supports GMS’ companion S422 SW Server. “Lightning” offers bus expansion capabilities to virtually any full size, full height PCIe 3.0 card, but is optimized to harness multiple GPGPU systems. The X422 affords the use of commercially available, full size, GPGPU products in a completely sealed and protected, extended temperature fully ruggedized enclosure that utilizes GMS’ patented RuggedCool technology. The X422 can accelerate large data processing tasks such as image recognition, digital signal processing, data mining, block chain computation, artificial intelligence, machine vision, image processing, vector processing, and other compute-intensive tasks.

Curtiss-Wright Defense Solution's Ground Vehicle Hand Controllers are an important interface between operator and machine, where reliability and user comfort are optimal. Hand Controllers are available as a one or two hand grip shell style. Each of the ergonomically designed motion control handles can hold as many as 12 independent sealed switches which are adaptable to customer’s requirements. Digital Hand Controllers process data via a central processing unit (CPU) that enables BIT and customers to define output characteristics. The standard version is equipped with an RS-422 or CANbus data link interface and typically connects to servo electronics or the customer’s subsystem. All Hand Controlelrs are fully galvanic isolated and equipped with electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and can be integrated into tanks, unmanned aerial systems (UASs), ships, simulators, or other military vehicles. At AUSA this week, an interactive demonstration, featuring tank simulation software, will enable visitors to the Curtiss-Wright booth to experience how Curtiss-Wright’s rugged ergonomically designed hand controllers provide tank crews with an ideal man-machine-interface in harsh environments.

General Micro Systems, Inc's (GMS') TITAN is a 1U/2U conduction-cooled rackmount server, with MIL-SPEC connectors, 2 or 4 2nd Generation Intel Scalable Xeon CPUs. Designed for high-reliability aerospace, defense, military, and industrial applications, TITAN is set apart by extreme density and expandability with air- and conduction-cooling options. In shock- and vibration-resistant conduction-cooled versions, TITAN is equipped with military-style circular 38999 connectors and uses patented internal cold plates and thermal mitigation in a sealed chassis to protect against ingress and EMI.

Curtiss-Wright Defense Solution's Parvus DuraNET 3300 Rugged Cisco Ethernet Switch is the embedded market’s most rugged Cisco IOS-based small form factor switch. Integrating Cisco’s ESS-3300 switch, the DuraNET 3300 offers networking capabilities, such as 10 Gigabit (10G) optical connectivity, MACsec Layer 2 encryption, and SWaP-enhancing Power over Ethernet (PoE) support – all in a highly reliable chassis designed for the harshest environmental conditions. At AUSA Curtiss-Wright is demonstrating their PoE-enabled DuraNET 3300 with a high-definition Internet Protocol (IP) camera powered by and networked to a PoE Ethernet switch. The resulting video feed is streamed from the camera to an LCD display to demonstrate how, using PoE, an Ethernet switch can be used to inject power to sensors like an IP camera and share IP video data over a single Ethernet cable without the need for a traditional power cable or separate power supply.

General Micro Systems, Inc's (GMS') "THUNDER" S422 is a rugged small form factor, conduction-cooled shoebox-sized 22 core Xeon-class server with 30x 10GbE and 4x 40GbE, intelligent Ethernet switch, removable drives, SecureDNA sanitize, optional Nvidia Tesla V100 GPGPU AI engine. Thunder is ideal for the application that requires the horsepower of a high-performance server, enterprise-class multi-port LAN or a NAS subsystem appliance, while deployed into a rugged platform with no fans required. When equipped with the router or intelligent Layer 2/3/4 Ethernet switch, Thunder becomes a rugged compact server, with a dedicated switch or router capabilities to offer maximum network flexibility. Thunder simplifies local data processing tasks that require an ultra-fast, Xeon-class server with vast amounts of high-speed, ECC-protected RAM and storage in one ultra-rugged chassis.
