Automated µMA-X system to support next-gen UUVs

THE WOODLANDS, Texas. Mitcham Industries, Inc. announced that its Klein Marine Systems unit has recently delivered the first micro-MA-X (µMA-X System) in support of U.S. Navy Next Generation Small-Class Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) evaluation sponsored by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).

The µMA-X system is the first in a series of new imaging products based on Klein's previously announced MA-X technology and is designed for both commercial and military unmanned vehicle markets. According to the company, the µMA-X system is a reduced size and weight payload designed for the growing UUV market.

MA-X technology represents a nadir imaging solution. Traditional side scan sonar imaging creates a nadir gap directly under the path of the vehicle. The µMA-X system is designed to fill that gap, when paired with conventional side scan, eliminating the need for additional time for overlapping survey lines.

For UUVs, this could translate into extended mission duration or shorter time to cover the same area. For the defense sector, the system's ability to produce high-quality imagery of the nadir area is comparable to the traditional side scan images, allowing the data acquired by the system to be fed into automatic target recognition software for automated detection and recognition of targets.
