Ansys and Airbus to collaborate on autonomous flight to support Europe's Future Combat Air System

CANONSBURG, Pa. and OTTOBRUNN, Germany. Engineering-simulation company Ansys and aviation giant Airbus Defense and Space have announced that the pair will use an Ansys embedded-software solution to develop an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in support of Europe's Future Combat Air System (FCAS).

 

According to company materials, the new Ansys solution will team up to blend safety-critical flight controls with sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI), with the aim of autonomous flight by 2030. The partnership will develop an advanced Ansys SCADE tool linking traditional model-based software development with new AI-based development flow; this tool will be a major part of the development, certification, and embedding of the UAV's flight-control software.

Europe's Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is a suite of fully automated remote air platforms teamed with next-generation fighter jets. To make FCAS a reality, advanced safety-critical, AI-driven flight-control software will be needed to perform sophisticated decision-making with unprecedented speed and accuracy.
